Biblical Prophecy and Current Events

In troubling times we look for signs, explanations, and certainty that brings order to disorder. The Bible, filled with the stories of God, his commands, and miraculous works throughout time and history is the resource we often consult. Did God predict this specific event? Is there something we can do to save ourselves from imminent doom from an angry God? Or maybe there is a secret code or revelation that somehow we missed? Apocalyptic texts like Daniel in the Old Testament rightfully grab hold of our curiosity and imagination in disruptive days like these. However, as we read these texts, perhaps the answers we’re looking for have been hiding in plain sight and are not so secretive after all.

The Call for Courageous Leaders

The global west is now on the front lines in the battle against COVID-19. The epicenter of the novel coronavirus has shifted from our distant shores to our communities. After a sudden two-week blitz in the United States of implementing extreme social distancing measures that included closing stadiums, canceling large events, shutting our borders, closing schools and offices, reducing restaurants to carry-out only, and preventing the doors of our church buildings from opening, we now enter a critical week.

Believing in Miracles

In a modern, science-based, data-driven society, everyday supernatural miracles are often difficult to ascertain. Even in our evangelical circles that have a strong emphasis on a ministry of the word (teaching and studying the Bible), we have a tendency to over-intellectualize our reading of scripture and downplay the spiritual activity of God. At Restoration Church, we have sought to recover and acknowledge all that God has done and is actively doing in our world, both through a ministry of his Word, but also through the power of his Spirit.

The Power, Purpose and Promise of God

Our modern affluent lives revolve around the things that fill us up. Coffee, Netflix, sports, dinner parties, weekend getaways, smartphones and shopping. We long to be filled with something that promises power and purpose in our lives, but these things always fall short and last only for a moment. Thankfully, God has already provided a perfectly fulfilling power and purpose that begins today and lasts for eternity – the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is not some cheap digital app that’s meant to improve our lives by helping us become more productive, organized or healthy. The Holy Spirit is God’s eternal power, purpose and promise given to every believer in Jesus Christ.
